Free roaming mares (Chile)
“Free Roaming Mares” is an SUR Theatre production about the first sexual minority protest in Chile. The protest took place in April 1973, just before the coup d’état and the beginning of the dictatorship. It brought together homosexuals, transgender people and other sexual minorities to demand equal rights and respectful treatment.
The production is based on archival footage and interviews with protest participants. “Free Roaming Mares” provides an opportunity to talk about what happened and to discuss the causes, consequences and impact of the protest on minority movements in Chile and Latin America. It is also a dialogue between different eras and contexts that will help reduce inequalities and violence against the LGBTQ+ community.
The production aims to highlight the contribution and importance of queer people in theatre and culture. The production stars trans actresses, whose experiences help to bring to the stage a range of thoughts and perspectives on the current situation of sexual minorities.
