Growing Up with Music. The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra
PROGRAM
Benjamin Britten
The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op. 34
Modest Mussorgsky
Pictures at an Exhibition (orchestrated by Maurice Ravel)
This year, at the children’s concert, we will get to know the musicians of the symphony orchestra more closely. Benjamin Britten wrote his famous Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra for the London Symphony Orchestra with the aim of teaching listeners to recognize and appreciate the different instruments and sections of a symphony orchestra. In the second half of the concert, we will hear Modest Mussorgsky’s much-loved cycle Pictures at an Exhibition, which presents musical images inspired by the artworks of the composer’s friend Viktor Hartmann. The music will be accompanied by an animation of the same title by Japanese artist Osamu Tezuka.
ERSO continues the concerts started in the 2016/17 season for all children born in the Year of Music (2015). This is a forward-looking project that helps parents guide their children towards live music. Not every child born in the Year of Music needs to become a musician, but an understanding of and love for music will certainly help them grow into better people. It is also possible that, years from now, some children born in the Year of Music will themselves take the stage with the orchestra or become good colleagues for today’s musicians.
