RESIDENT: BIANCA RANTALA. INDIE NIGHT ft. ORIGINAL STANDARDS ft. JONAS METSÄKYLÄ & CHUCK ISRAELS
Wednesday, 27 August 9 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
The Philly Joe’s Summer Residency programme provides a platform for talented young Estonian artists on the jazz scene! New ensembles, colourful programs and the opportunity to hear jazz and music with its influences from a new perspective on every concert evening - all this is offered by selected artists, week after week throughout the summer.
August's resident is singer-composer Bianca Rantala who will be performing with different projects and collaborators every week. The resident can be heard on Wednesdays throughout the month (06.08, 13.08, 20.08 ja 27.08).
“Original Standards”
Legendary American double bassist Chuck Israels will be welcomed in Tallinn by Bianca Rantala and Jonas Metsäkylä as they take the stage in a rare trio – an extraordinary combination that can only be heard this summer in Estonia.
The evening will begin with a radio recording, where the jazz legend shares personal stories and memories of his collaborations with Israeli greats such as the Bill Evans Trio, Billie Holiday, Herbie Hancock and many others. This is a rare opportunity to hear jazz history directly from the heart of it – from the man who shaped it himself.
In the second half of the concert, the Rantala Trio will take the stage, performing a selection of original compositions and fresh-sounding jazz classics. This evening will bring intimacy, creativity and three different generations’ perspectives on contemporary jazz music.
Chuck Israels is an American jazz bassist, composer and arranger, born in New York. Israels is best known for his work with The Bill Evans Trio (1961-1966). He served as Director of the National Jazz Ensemble from 1973 to 1981. He is now the Director of Jazz Studies at Western Washington University in Bellingham.
Jonas Metsäkylä, a Finnish guitarist currently making waves on the Paris jazz scene, brings a distinctive touch to this warm and refined collaboration.
