Séverine Morfin Mad Maple (France) • Sügisjazz 2025
The French have always been eager to explore new paths in art and music, and the Mad Maple Quartet is proof of this. Their music brings together the viola, clarinet, and guitar, enriched by natural sounds that merge seamlessly with the instruments’ acoustic tones. Mad Maple crafts masterful compositions into a seamless whole, immersing the listener in an experience that feels like both music and a captivating nature film.
In Mad Maple, the two poles of music – precise form and free improvisation – come together with natural ease. The ensemble’s name is no coincidence: its leader, Séverine Morfin, plays a master-crafted viola made from maple, and her longstanding passion for exploring the sounds of nature has deeply shaped her compositions. Céline Grangey – familiar to attentive Jazzkaar audiences from Eve Risser’s Red Desert Orchestra – enriches the quartet’s soundscape with her natural sound-based design. On clarinet, Elodie Pasquier, and on guitar and banjo, Guillaume Magne, perform with the precision of true masters. Together, the ensemble plays with effortless unity and complete harmony – like the untouched nature that inspires them.
