RESIDENT: KALEV KARLSON TRIO. JOE PASS SONGBOOK
Wednesday, 11 June 9 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
The Philly Joe’s Summer Residency programme provides a platform for talented young Estonian artists on the jazz scene! New ensembles, colourful programs and the opportunity to hear jazz and music with its influences from a new perspective on every concert evening - all this is offered by selected artists, week after week throughout the summer.
June’s resident is guitarist Kalev Karlson, whose concerts will take place on Wednesdays in June and during Midsummer week on Friday, June 27.
“Joe Pass Songbook”
Kalev Karlson Trio, a classically structured trio consisting of drums, bass and semi-acoustic jazz guitar. The ensemble performs the repertoire of the legendary American guitarist Joe Pass, placing emphasis on the chord melody inherent in the solo jazz guitar tradition, of which Joe Pass was the undisputed master. The trio is characterized by their search for beautiful, improvisational melodies and responsive musicianship.
“Guitarists should be able to pick up the guitar and play music on it for an hour, without a rhythm section or anything.” - Joe Pass
Kalev Karlson is an Estonian jazz guitarist recognized for his unique style and diverse musical influences, ranging from European jazz to North American traditions. He graduated from the Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands and has performed with several renowned jazz musicians, including Lembit Saarsalu Quintet, Hedvig Hanson, Helin-Mari Arder, Raivo Tafenau, Siim Aimla, Aleksander Paal and Nikita Korzoun. Kalev has released three albums so far: ambient album “Pedal Stories” (2019), duo album “Duets” (2021) in collaboration with guitarist Jaan Jaanson and solo guitar album “Dream a Little Dream” (2023).
