TOHI GIN PRESENTS: ALEKSANDER PAAL. RECALIBRATION, vol.2: "SINGULAR ALIGNMENT"
Wednesday, April 15, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
Recalibration is an ongoing series dedicated to the development of new material and the refinement of musical language within the post-bop tradition. It provides a focused framework for compositional work, allowing ideas to mature through repeated performance.
Vol. 2 presents a classic quintet format, bringing together saxophone and trumpet alongside piano, bass, and drums. The repertoire draws inspiration from the Blue Note tradition, revisiting its structural clarity, rhythmic vitality, and direct expressive language. Rather than treating this lineage as a historical reference, the music approaches it as a living system — one that continues to offer space for individual voice and contemporary perspective.
The title “Singular Alignment” reflects a process familiar to many developing musicians: the gradual return to an original point of orientation. Over time, exposure to multiple influences and directions can obscure the initial impulse that drew one to the music. Alignment emerges not through accumulation, but through reduction — by setting aside excess and reestablishing a direct relationship with the core language. In this setting, the quintet becomes a vehicle for that clarity, allowing the music to move forward without losing contact with its source.
