Opening concert of the summer season: Rajandi/ Valjakka/ Vannesluoma (EE-FI)
Friday, June 20, 9 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
Mingo Rajandi met his Finnish colleagues for the first time last year in Helsinki, where they spent a dull morning improvising together. The three worlds did not collide, but merged and exploded to create new universes. This energy was so refreshing that now they are performing in front of an audience for the first time.
The music of Juho Valjakka, Josefiina Vannesluoma and Mingo Rajandi combines the delicate and the powerful, the clear and the boundless. The musician-composers seek common and individual ways of being at the intersection of art forms, drawing meanings from poetry and movement, among other things. The acoustic avant-garde of voice, piano and double bass alternates between beautiful textures, volcanic flows and crystalline reflections, where the musicians surprise themselves by discovering new meanings that arise when language and sounds meet.
Josefiina Vannesluoma is a rising star in Finland, captivating with her charming stage presence, exciting compositions and bold improvisations.
Juho Valjakka is an extremely sensitive creator and pianist who listens and feels deeply to his fellow musicians and his playing can be heard in many ensembles.
Mingo Rajandi is an Estonian composer and double bass player, bandleader, and initiator of various interdisciplinary projects.
With their debut concerts, the fresh trio will play each player’s compositions, which are linked together by very free improvisations.
Line-up:
Mingo Rajandi - double bass
Juho Valjakka - piano
Josefiina Vannesluoma - vocals
