Robert Rebane Quintet
ROBERT REBANE QUINTET
Friday, May 8, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
The Robert Rebane Quintet is a fresh group on the Estonian jazz scene, whose music combines the freedom, lyricism and playful improvisation of modern jazz. Their sound alternates between calm, intimate moments and energetic, rhythmically dense climaxes. The band's repertoire consists mainly of original songs, where you can hear both modern jazz harmonies and Nordic melancholy. The music does not remain strictly within its original framework, but leaves room for spontaneity and ideas that arise in the moment.
An important part of the quintet's sound is the mutual understanding between the members. Everyone brings their own style, but at the same time they maintain a common direction. The artists go on stage to listen and react rather than to play a specific plan to the end. Robert Rebane, as the leader of the ensemble, keeps this whole group together, directing the music in such a way that the balance between composition and free improvisation is maintained. The result is honest and direct music.
Robert Rebane began his musical career as an accordionist at the Nõmme Music School and the Georg Ots Tallinn Music School under the guidance of Olivia and Tiit Kallust. He later studied piano and guitar independently and graduated from the Jazz Department of the Amsterdam Conservatory in 2019 with a degree in bass guitar. In recent years, he can be heard in productions at the Drama Theatre, Ugala Theatre and VAT Theatre, as well as on concert stages with various artists, such as Johannes Laas, Tobias Tammearu, Karl Madis Pennar, Marianne Leibur, Ivi Rausi, Puhkuseloomad, etc.
Robert’s quintet is formed of musicians with whom he has played a lot of music together at different times of his life.
