OPENING THE AUTUMN SEASON OF TARTU JAZZ CLUB!
We invite you to Contriber & Philly Joe’s Tartu Club to enjoy live jazz music at Kompanii 2, 2nd floor.
Carl Winther Trio offers a musical experience far beyond the ordinary.
Carl Winther – piano
Makar Novikov – double bass
Ivars Arutyunyans – drums
The trio was formed in 2023 and is quickly making its mark on the jazz scene.
The music consists mainly of Winther’s original compositions, complemented by arrangements of American jazz standards and works by Carl’s father, trumpeter Jens Winther.
In recent years, Carl Winther has stood out by performing with many of the jazz world’s greats, including David Liebman, Randy Brecker, Walt Weiskopf, George Garzone, and Jerry Bergonzi. Both Walt and Jerry also feature him in Bergonzi’s own quartet/quintet, and he has contributed to Bergonzi’s two most recent albums. Winther has toured extensively around the world, including in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Bolivia, Chile, China, and most of Europe, and has achieved first places in several prestigious jazz competitions.
Carl Winther was born on October 8, 1984, in Denmark, and drew inspiration from his family’s musical heritage. His father, Jens Winther, was a renowned jazz musician, his mother, Karen Mortensen, is a drummer, and his sister, Malene Mortensen, is a singer. Winther began studying piano at the age of seven, receiving training in both classical and jazz music. He further honed his skills at the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen, where he met bassist Joel Illerhag and formed partnerships that would lead to the creation of a successful trio.
Makar Novikov, from Moscow, is a well-known jazz double bassist. An experienced accompanist and virtuoso soloist, he has performed with artists such as Jimmy Cobb, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, and James Spaulding. He graduated from the prestigious Gnesins’ Russian Academy of Music.
After moving to Italy in 2022, he began working closely with Italian musicians such as Rosario Giuliani and Maurizio Giammarco, and started teaching jazz double bass at the Siena Jazz University. Today, he regularly performs as part of projects led by Alex Sipiagin and Antonio Faraò, as well as with the Olivia Trummer Trio and the Isfar Sarabski Trio, touring worldwide.
