Karmen Rõivassepp & Aarhus Jazz Orchestra (Eesti–Taani) • Jazzkaar 2025
On the evening of the announcement of Jazz Musician of the Year 2025, the spotlight will turn to Karmen Rõivassepp, Jazz Musician of the Year 2024, as she takes the stage to ceremonially pass the baton. A talented composer, singer, and arranger, Rõivassepp will unveil a brand-new programme crafted specifically for the Jazzkaar festival, in collaboration with the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. Her new compositions, inspired by Nordic jazz and folk music traditions, are paired with the poetry of Estonian writers and infused with electronic elements.
Having spent many years studying and working in Denmark, Karmen Rõivassepp brings a richly diverse perspective to her compositions, blending captivating melodies with intricate harmonies. “Over the years, I have come to know the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra very well, so I am not just writing big band music, but music specifically for the individuals in this ensemble,” Rõivassepp explains about the creative process behind her new work. “The orchestra has given me complete creative freedom – musically and artistically, I can take this wherever I want. In my compositions, I have always included Estonian poetry, and I will certainly do so this time too. I have made space for free improvisation, effect pedals, fiery big band choruses, and jazz solos,” she adds, showcasing her bold and imaginative approach.
Estonian jazz singer and composer Karmen Rõivassepp is recognised as one of Europe’s most promising jazz talents. The renowned jazz magazine DownBeat has praised her as a vocalist with exceptional clarity and intonation. She leads her own quartet, which has released two critically acclaimed albums: Dance of Sounds (2018) and Breathe (2021). Her collaboration with the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra led to the release of the album Ambivalence, which earned the Jazz Album of the Year award at the Estonian Music Awards in 2023. Furthermore, Rõivassepp was honoured as Jazz Composer of the Year in both Estonia and Denmark in the same year.
The Aarhus Jazz Orchestra stands as one of Europe’s premier big bands. Renowned for its sophisticated musicality and professional artistry, the orchestra has been captivating audiences and critics alike since its establishment in 1977. It plays a pivotal role in fostering and advancing Danish jazz.
