Anemoon • Jazzkaar 2025
Anemoon brings to life the creations of two gifted musicians, Anna Regina Kalk and Anett Tamm, weaving together themes of Aphrodite’s tears, Adonis’ blood, abandoned love, misfortune, spring weather, and the art of Henri Matisse. Their music delves into serious topics with a touch of humour, and treats simple themes with surprising depth, resulting in a distinctive blend of jazz, indie, and post-punk.
A captivating mix of sweetness and virtue, poison and enchantment, Anemoon thrives on improvisation, embracing a free-flowing, surprise-filled form of expression that encourages both mutual trust and playful provocation. Kalk’s guitar lines are inventive and sharp, enhanced by carefully selected vocal and guitar effects that evoke comparisons to the British band The Smile. Supporting this adventurous interplay, the rhythm section offers a solid foundation, anchoring the bold explorations of the guitar and vocals. While jazz serves as their primary inspiration, Anemoon ventures beyond its boundaries with curiosity and intent, taking small risks that continually yield rewarding results.
Born in Tartu and holding a master’s degree from Bern, jazz guitarist Anna Regina Kalk has contributed her creativity to projects like Assonance, Anemoon, EDNA, and the Anna Kalk Quartet. Beginning her musical journey as a teenager covering Nirvana songs, she eventually found her path to jazz. Kalk has honed her craft under the guidance of renowned artists in Estonia, Germany, and Switzerland.
Anett Tamm is a singer, composer, and improviser who received the Estonian Young Jazz Talent Award in 2022. She leads innovative projects such as TamTam, Alonette, and Anemoon, while also lending her expressive vocals to ensembles like the David Chevallier Trio, IHA, and The Nonconceptual Art Club.
